Platform Redesign with AI

Over the past year, WeAuction has undergone a significant redesign initiative aimed at modernizing the platform. Throughout the project, the team redesigned core areas, including auction listings, item pages, live auctions, registration flows, widgets, and tenant customization capabilities.

What makes this redesign particularly interesting is the role artificial intelligence played throughout the process. Rather than treating AI as a feature to be delivered to end users, the team used it as an accelerator for product design, user experience exploration, and frontend development. By combining AI-powered design generation with modern software engineering practices, the team was able to explore more ideas, validate concepts faster, and quickly move to implementation without jeopardizing quality.

The Process

The WeAuction redesign introduced a new approach to product design and frontend development by leveraging AI-generated design concepts as a starting point for implementation. A key role in this process was played by Lovable, an AI-powered application builder that allowed the team to rapidly generate modern interface concepts and user journeys.

Instead of beginning with static mock-ups and lengthy design iterations, the team used Lovable to create realistic design references that demonstrated how different parts of the platform could look and behave. These concepts helped stakeholders visualize the future platform early in the process and provided developers with a practical foundation for implementation. The generated designs were not deployed directly into production. Instead, they served as inspiration and guidance for the development team, who refined, adapted, and transformed them into production-ready solutions tailored to WeAuction's unique requirements.

The Payoff

Traditionally, redesign projects require extensive collaboration between stakeholders, designers, and developers before implementation can begin, with multiple design iterations and feedback cycles slowing the process down.

Working from AI-generated design references changed that dynamic. Ideas could be visualized almost immediately, making discussions more productive and reducing uncertainty around requirements. Stakeholders evaluated concepts based on tangible examples rather than abstract descriptions, which led to faster decisions and stronger alignment across the project.

The redesign also addressed broader business goals. WeAuction serves multiple customers with different branding requirements, making flexibility essential to the platform's future. The work therefore focused not only on aesthetics but on building a customizable design system that supports different tenants on a shared product foundation — and early discussions already explored how AI could support future branding and customization needs.

The Payoff

How did it work?

Beyond the design phase, the redesign relied on a modern frontend architecture built for long-term maintainability. Once Lovable's design concepts were reviewed and refined, developers translated them into structured production code using:

  • The latest Angular framework
  • Tailwind CSS for responsive and maintainable styling.
  • Generated API clients based on OpenAPI specifications.
  • Localization support for multilingual deployments.
  • A centralized theming system, letting tenants configure colors, typography, logos, and other visual elements while sharing the same underlying platform.
Benefits

Benefits

  • Faster UX exploration — Design concepts that once took days to produce could be generated and evaluated in minutes, freeing up time for refinement rather than initial exploration.
  • Better stakeholder alignment — Working from tangible prototypes rather than written requirements reduced ambiguity and sped up decision-making.
  • Shorter design-to-development handoff — Starting from realistic Lovable references, rather than translating abstract specs, let developers move into implementation sooner.

Conclusion

The WeAuction redesign demonstrates that artificial intelligence can create substantial value even when it is not part of the final product experience. By leveraging Lovable to generate design concepts and frontend references, the team was able to accelerate UX exploration, improve stakeholder collaboration, and shorten the path from idea to implementation. Combined with a modern Angular-based architecture, flexible tenant theming, and a comprehensive overhaul of core user journeys, the redesign has positioned WeAuction for future growth while delivering immediate benefits to customers and end users.
